Is the PSTN switch off a sales tactic by my provider to get me to upgrade?

Not necessarily. Every landline provider in the UK must switch its customers to a digital line service because the underlying national network is closing, not just one company's service. If a provider contacts you about it, it's about moving your telephone line to keep your phone line working.

The difference is that some providers are using this opportunity to also offer a fibre broadband upgrade alongside your landline upgrade. In doing so, they may also need to drill a hole into your property to bring the digital phone into the property. This landline and fibre deal may be far more expensive or offer less value than deals you would find when comparing different broadband providers. Community Fibre has been awarded a Great Value Provider by the consumer champion Which? (March 2026), so if you do nothing else, check out our prices to make sure you are getting the best deal.
