Fibre To Your Room: What you need to know
When you sign up to Community Fibre and want your top speeds in a particular place, you can choose our unique Fibre To Your Room installation option. Here’s how it works, what to decide in advance, and tips to make the installation go smoothly.
What is Fibre To Your Room?
Normally, the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and your router are located a maximum of 10 metres from the entry point (normally on the ground floor at the front or back of the property).
With Fibre To Your Room you can instead choose to have the equipment installed in a room of your choice as long as the fibre cable run is under 40 metres from the entry point. The entry point can also be on the ground, first or second floors. We do not cover lofts, basement spaces, garages and outbuildings.
What are the benefits?
With broadband you will always get the fastest speeds available with a wired connection from the router to the device (be that a Computer, TV or gaming console).
Similarly, WiFi speeds are usually faster the closer you are to the router. So, our Fibre To Your Room installation gives you the choice to have those wired connections where you want it (under the 40m cable run constraint). As well as helping with speed, the right location can help with your home aesthetic with easier access to power sockets and hiding cables.
A bonus is that, when combined with our Premium WiFi package, you can also get whole-home WiFi coverage.
What to decide before the engineer arrives?
To avoid delays or extra work, it’s helpful to plan before the installation. Here’s what you need to think about:
Item | What to check / decide |
---|---|
Preferred room | Which room do you want the ONT and router to go in? A central, convenient spot (e.g. study or living room) usually works best. |
Entry point location | Where will the fibre enter your home (front wall, side wall, ground floor, upstairs)? Measure roughly how far the cable would run along walls from the entry point to your chosen room. The route must be under 40 metres. |
Power socket availability | The ONT and router need mains power. Check there’s a reliable socket near your chosen location, in a place where devices can be plugged in without trailing wires. |
